India news: Defense exports surge to over $4 billion
India’s Defense Exports Reach Record High
India’s defense exports exceeded $4.1 billion in the fiscal year ending March 2026, according to government data released on Thursday. This marks a significant increase of over 60% compared to the prior year, driven by heightened international interest in locally produced military technology.
“India is progressing rapidly toward becoming a global defense manufacturing leader,” stated Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, emphasizing the growing trust in the nation’s indigenous production capabilities.
Government-owned entities contributed approximately 55% of the total exports, with private firms handling the remaining share. The country’s military equipment, including missiles, radar systems, and electronic components, now reaches over 80 nations.
Artwork Sets New Auction Benchmark
A 19th-century oil painting by Raja Ravi Varma, titled “Yashoda and Krishna,” shattered records at an auction in Mumbai, fetching $17.9 million. The sale surpassed the estimated value of $8.6 million to $12.9 million, becoming the most expensive modern Indian artwork ever sold.
“This national treasure deserves public exposure,” said Cyrus Poonawalla, chairman of Serum Institute of India, who acquired the piece. “I plan to display it periodically for wider appreciation.”
Saffronart, the auction house, highlighted that the painting, created in the 1890s, is among Varma’s most celebrated works. The sale reflects a surge in demand for Indian cultural artifacts on the global market.
Parliament Adjourns Ahead of State Elections
Parliament will be suspended on Thursday and is anticipated to reconvene after the state elections to address proposed amendments to laws allocating reserved seats for women. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju announced the decision in the upper house.
Rijiju noted that over 80% of political parties had been consulted on the initiative. The opposition Congress party suggested holding the session following the assembly elections, as reported by Akashvani News.
The 2023 legislation mandates 33% of parliamentary seats to be reserved for women. Traditionally, sessions are adjourned sine die, but this move aims to facilitate legislative discussions before the elections.
Weather Forecast: Western Disturbances Bring Rain and Storms
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted rainfall and potential thunderstorms across northwestern regions, alongside lightning, strong winds, and temperature fluctuations. These weather patterns are linked to two western disturbances.
According to the IMD, the systems will impact the western Himalayas and adjacent plains on Friday, Saturday, and Tuesday. Hailstorms are anticipated in Delhi and surrounding areas of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana on April 3-4, with heavy rain expected in the Kashmir Valley.
Such disturbances are common during this season and often alter precipitation and temperature trends in northern India.
Airfare Increases Amid Fuel Cost Hikes
India’s airlines are set to raise fares due to increased jet fuel costs tied to the Middle East conflict. IndiGo announced revised fuel surcharges for domestic and international flights starting Thursday.
The government limited the domestic price hike to 25%, while international carriers may see larger adjustments. Petroleum ministry officials cited global energy market pressures as the reason for the fuel price rise, which has affected the aviation sector.
This follows March announcements by Indian airlines about fuel surcharges, signaling ongoing challenges in managing operational expenses amid rising costs.
