Who is Christopher LaNeve, set to lead the US army?

Christopher LaNeve is scheduled to take on the role of acting Chief of Staff of the US Army, as reported by CBS News, the BBC’s US partner. His leadership follows the resignation of Randy George, who had held the position since 2023, after being asked to step down by Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth.

A Shift in Command

The Chief of Staff position represents the pinnacle of authority within the Army, typically requiring a four-year tenure. Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell highlighted LaNeve’s credentials, stating that he is “a battle-tested leader with decades of operational experience” and “completely trusted by Secretary Hegseth to carry out the vision of this administration without fault.”

“A generational leader who will help ensure the Army revives the warrior ethos, rebuilds for the modern battlefield, and deters our enemies around the world,” Hegseth said in February 2026 when LaNeve was appointed Vice Chief of Staff.

LaNeve’s promotion comes amid ongoing operations in Iran and as part of a broader restructuring of the US military under Hegseth. Since entering the Pentagon, Hegseth has removed over a dozen senior officials, a process LaNeve has been part of. This is his third major assignment under the Defence Secretary, following his replacement of Lt Gen Jennifer Short in early 2025.

LaNeve’s military journey began at the University of Arizona in 1990. Over three decades, he has commanded units such as the Eighth Army in South Korea and the 82nd Airborne Division, while also participating in combat missions across Afghanistan and Iraq. His recent roles have included serving as a senior military assistant to Hegseth since April 2025.

With his new responsibilities, LaNeve will now oversee the Army’s strategic direction, reflecting his extensive experience and the trust placed in him by top officials. This appointment underscores the administration’s efforts to reshape military leadership amid current global challenges.
