India: Modi, Gandhi Invoke Christ’s Teachings on Good Friday

On Friday, April 3, Indian leaders emphasized themes of contemplation, empathy, and solidarity during Good Friday observances. Devotees gathered at churches nationwide for prayer services, while political figures highlighted the relevance of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice to national unity. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, sharing his thoughts on social media, called for deeper values of peace, mercy, and reconciliation, urging citizens to embrace brotherhood and optimism.

Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi also expressed well-wishes for peace and affection on the Christian holiday, aligning with the broader message of harmony. Vice President CP Radhakrishnan echoed these sentiments, stating that the day invites reflection on Christ’s lessons of humility, selflessness, and justice, reinforcing the importance of integrity and communal well-being.

Iranian Oil Tanker Redirected Mid-Voyage

Meanwhile, an Iranian crude oil tanker, supported by U.S. sanctions, altered its course from India to China during transit. According to ship-tracking data from Kpler, the Aframax vessel *Ping Shun* originally destined for Vadinar, Gujarat, is now headed to Dongying, China. Sumit Ritolia, Kpler’s lead analyst, suggested this change might stem from financial uncertainties. Indian authorities confirmed they were unaware of the tanker’s arrival at domestic ports, missing an opportunity to import Iranian oil since 2019 following the U.S. sanctions waiver.

Domestic LPG Shortages and Market Raids

As part of efforts to manage energy supply, Indian police recovered over 400 cooking gas cylinders hidden in a Hyderabad graveyard. Ten individuals were arrested for allegedly selling the cylinders at triple the market rate, contributing to shortages exacerbated by the Iran war. Officials reported 2,600 raids on Wednesday, seizing approximately 700 cylinders to prevent hoarding. Despite global price fluctuations, the government assured citizens that local LPG reserves remain stable, as India relies on about 60% of its LPG imports.

AAP Internal Strife Over Leadership Shift

Amid political turmoil, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) faced internal disputes after replacing Member of Parliament Raghav Chadha as deputy leader in the upper house, a move labeled as internal restructuring. Chadha and other senior members disputed his removal, with Chadha questioning whether addressing public concerns in Parliament constitutes a crime. “Whenever I have a chance to speak, I highlight societal issues,” he argued, noting the party’s directive to limit his parliamentary contributions.

Saurabh Bharadwaj, a prominent AAP figure, criticized Chadha’s recent parliamentary approach on social media, accusing him of not challenging Prime Minister Modi or the BJP. Bharadwaj also claimed Chadha failed to advocate for Arvind Kejriwal, the party’s leader. Chadha, however, had previously brought attention to topics like paternity leave, flight delay compensation, and urban traffic challenges.

Climate Threats to Patanwadi Sheep

Yet climate change and the influx of imported wool now threaten their survival, unless urgent action is taken. This development underscores the delicate balance between tradition and modern economic pressures in the region.
