Missing Cuba-bound aid boats arrive safely in Havana

Two sailboats, which had disappeared during their journey from Mexico to Havana, were finally found and brought to port on Saturday. The Mexican Navy played a key role in locating the vessels and ensuring their safe arrival in the Cuban capital.

Crew Details

The boats carried a crew of nine individuals, including a young boy aged four and several nationals from the United States, France, and Germany. Upon docking, the group was reported to be in good health and high spirits, according to officials.

“We were never in any real danger. It was not a very difficult journey. It’s just a circuitous one,” said Adnaan Stumo, the 33-year-old American coordinator of the Nuestra America Convoy.

Stumo also emphasized the significance of the mission, stating, “We’re so happy to bring a crew from so many different countries that are demonstrating solidarity and support for the Cuban people in the face of this criminal blockade.”

Convoy Background

The vessels had departed from Isla Mujeres, part of Mexico’s Quintana Roo state, the previous week. Their destination was Havana, where they were scheduled to deliver the last batch of supplies from the Nuestra America Convoy. The aid, which includes food, medicine, solar panels, and bicycles, aims to address critical shortages in Cuba, exacerbated by the tightened U.S. embargo.

Originally expected to reach Havana by Tuesday or Wednesday, the boats were delayed by adverse weather conditions. The Mexican Navy spotted them 80 nautical miles northwest of Cuba and guided them to safety. The sailors expressed gratitude for the rescue efforts, though they remained unfazed by the earlier uncertainty.

US Embargo Context

US President Donald Trump had previously imposed an oil blockade on Cuba in January, after ousting Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro. He also warned nations supplying Cuba with oil about potential tariffs. On Friday, Trump reiterated these threats, calling Cuba “next” in his list of targets despite ongoing conflicts with Iran.

The Nuestra America Convoy, a coalition representing over 30 countries and more than 300 organizations, has already transported 20 tons of aid to Cuba via air and sea. The successful delivery of the missing boats underscores the coalition’s commitment to overcoming challenges and supporting the Cuban people.
