Iran War: Search Continues for Missing Crew of Downed US Jet
Iranian forces and the U.S. are engaged in a race to locate a crew member of an F-15 fighter jet shot down over Iran. The incident has intensified diplomatic and military tensions in the region. Meanwhile, the UN Security Council has postponed a decision on employing force to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil trade.
UN Resolution Delayed Amid Opposition
Originally set for Friday, the Security Council’s vote on a resolution to protect maritime traffic in Hormuz was delayed. The proposal, backed by Bahrain (which holds the rotating presidency), aimed to authorize “defensive” military action against Iranian threats. However, the resolution faced pushback from China, Russia, and other nations. Beijing emphasized its stance against using force, warning it could escalate conflicts further.
“Authorizing force would legitimize the unlawful and indiscriminate use of military power, inevitably leading to heightened tensions and severe repercussions,” stated China’s UN representative Fu Cong during Thursday’s session.
Regional Developments and Diplomatic Moves
Two U.S. warplanes were downed over Iran and the Gulf on Friday, marking day 36 of the ongoing conflict. In response to U.S.-Israeli strikes starting February 28, Iran has effectively sealed the strait, disrupting about 20% of global oil shipments. The resolution, initially stricter, was softened after objections, requiring at least nine approvals and no vetoes from the five permanent members—Britain, China, France, Russia, and the U.S.
Despite the closure, a French-operated container ship from CMA CGM successfully navigated the strait, showcasing resilience in the face of Iranian restrictions. The U.S. Embassy in Beirut advised citizens to depart Lebanon, though commercial flights remain operational. These updates highlight the evolving dynamics of the crisis as international actors seek to balance security and diplomacy.
