Paris: Suspected Bomb Attack at Bank of America Stopped

Two Suspects Involved in Early Morning Incident

French authorities apprehended a suspect during a suspected bombing attempt near a Bank of America location in Paris on Saturday, while his accomplice remains at large. The attack was thwarted when police intervened before the explosive could be activated, according to reports from the AFP news agency. The event occurred at approximately 03:30 a.m. (02:30 GMT), just a short distance from the famed Champs-Elysees.

Details of the Explosive Device

Officers observed two individuals near the bank, each holding a shopping bag. One suspect reportedly installed a device containing an ignition system and a liquid believed to be fuel, preparing to ignite it when he was seized by police. His partner in crime fled the scene. Initial checks revealed 650 grams (23 ounces) of explosive powder within the device, which is now being analyzed in a forensic laboratory.

“Credit goes to the swift action of the Paris police prefecture unit, which prevented a terrorist act in the early hours,” said Interior Minister Laurent Nunez in a statement on X. “Security forces are operating with heightened awareness,” he added, praising their readiness amid the current geopolitical climate.

Investigation into Alleged Terrorism

The National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT) has initiated an inquiry into potential terrorism charges. These include attempted arson, creation of explosive devices, possession and transport of such equipment with intent to cause harm, and association with a terrorist group. A police source, speaking to AFP, revealed the suspect was recruited through Snapchat to carry out the attack in exchange for €600 ($692).

Enhanced Security Measures

French authorities have intensified protections for U.S.-related institutions and Jewish community sites following recent strikes by the U.S. and Israel on Iran. This includes heightened personal security for certain Iranian opposition figures in exile. A Bank of America representative confirmed awareness of the situation and ongoing communication with French officials.
