After more than 14 years at Atletico Madrid, what next for Simeone?

After Over a Decade at Atletico Madrid, What Lies Ahead for Simeone?

Diego Simeone’s 14-year stint as Atletico Madrid’s manager has reshaped the club’s identity. Once an inconsistent side, Atletico has become a top-tier force under his leadership, challenging Barcelona and Real Madrid in La Liga and consistently reaching European finals.

In 2014, Simeone led the team to their first La Liga title in 18 years, a feat that marked a turning point. His previous experience in Argentina with River Plate and Estudiantes had already established his tactical acumen, but at Atletico, he transformed their defensive solidity into a key asset. The club’s goalkeeping and midfield have since become the backbone of their competitive edge.

Questions Rise Amid New Ownership

As Atletico prepares for its 14th season under Simeone, whispers of uncertainty have grown louder. The club’s recent ownership shift, led by Apollo Sports Capital, has introduced fresh ambitions. While Simeone remains contracted until 2027, the pressure to deliver trophies has intensified, especially after consecutive campaigns without major silverware.

“We went from being ‘El Pupas – the jinxed ones’ to a club that can stand toe-to-toe with Barcelona and Real Madrid without fear,” says Guillermo Myela, an Atletico supporter. “The connection he has with the club and its fans is something rare in modern football. He lives for Atletico Madrid.”

Simeone’s managerial record is unparalleled. With 786 matches at the helm, he has secured 465 victories, 170 draws, and 151 losses. His ability to maintain consistency over more than 14 and a half seasons has earned him a place among the longest-serving coaches in global football. Yet, the Argentine has not ruled out future moves, hinting at a potential return to Inter Milan in a 2025 interview.

Despite his loyalty, Simeone’s desire to manage another former club has sparked debate. His journey to Atletico began with a significant role in European football, as he guided Catania to Serie A safety before leading Atletico to success. The club’s rise from 10th place in La Liga to a top-four finish this season reflects his enduring impact. However, as the 2022–23 season unfolded, critics argued that his defensive strategy had become predictable, leaving fans divided on his future.

Javier del Amo, a lifelong supporter, praises Simeone as “one of the biggest icons in our history,” citing his role in rekindling fan pride. Dani Ruiz echoes this sentiment, calling him “the epitome of Atletico and what modern football has become.” Yet, with Barcelona looming in three La Liga fixtures and a Champions League quarter-final clash, the challenge of sustaining his legacy remains.
