Ukraine: ‘Massive’ Russian Air Strikes Kill at Least 14

On the 1,500th day of the war, Ukraine faced intense aerial assaults from Russian forces, including missiles and drones equipped with jet engines. Ukrainian officials confirmed that at least 14 individuals were killed across the country during these strikes, which occurred primarily during the night and early morning hours. The attacks marked a shift in tactics, with Russia reportedly employing advanced methods to target Ukraine’s critical infrastructure.

Kharkiv Under Fire

Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, endured relentless air strikes on Thursday and Friday. Local authorities stated that four rocket attacks and over 20 drone strikes targeted the city, causing significant damage to residential and commercial buildings. The use of Iranian-built Shahed drones, known for their speed over short distances, complicated defense efforts, as they proved challenging to intercept.

According to officials, the barrage of drones followed rocket strikes, signaling a coordinated strategy. At least eight fatalities were reported in Kharkiv and nearby regions like Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia. In Kyiv and surrounding areas, Russian daytime strikes killed one person, per the local military administration’s head, Mykola Kalashnyk. Additional casualties were noted in Sumy, Zhytomyr, and Dnipropetrovsk regions.

Ukrainian Air Force Response

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia launched 542 drones and 37 missiles since Thursday night. Defense units managed to shoot down 515 drones and 26 missiles. A spokesperson for the air force noted, “We see that the enemy is using new routes, increasingly modernized drones, and new tactics,” highlighting the evolving threat. This tactic of combining overnight drone strikes with daytime attacks has been observed twice this week, aiming to overwhelm Ukrainian defenses.

Poland also activated its military aviation in response to the attacks, as confirmed by the Polish armed forces. The country’s jets and radar systems were placed on high alert following Russian long-range strikes. Meanwhile, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized Russia for intensifying attacks ahead of Easter, stating, “At the very moment of our conversation, the Russians attacked Ukraine yet again.” He described the escalation as turning “what should have been silence in the skies into an Easter escalation.”

Peace Talks and Frontline Status

Zelenskyy mentioned that Kyiv was prepared for a potential truce during the Easter holidays, but the Kremlin dismissed any such proposals. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called Russian forces “terrorists” on X, asserting that they “reject diplomacy and peace efforts.”

Peace discussions mediated by the U.S. have stalled, partly due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. Despite this, Zelenskyy invited U.S. negotiators to Kyiv, proposing an alternative format for talks. He noted, “The delegation will do everything possible under the current circumstances — during the war with Iran — to come to Kyiv.”

Regarding the eastern frontline, Zelenskyy claimed the situation remains stable, with conditions “slightly in the positive” for Ukraine. He stated, “At this point, we do not see a large-scale threat,” emphasizing Ukrainian forces’ success in repelling recent assaults.
