Trump Seeks $152m to Reopen Historic Alcatraz Prison

President Donald Trump has proposed allocating $152 million to restore Alcatraz as a high-security prison. The project is part of a broader budget plan for the 2027 fiscal year. Situated close to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, the site—commonly called The Rock—once held a reputation as one of the United States’ most feared detention centers.

Ambitious Plan for a Modern Facility

The budget aims to finance the initial phase of transforming Alcatraz into a cutting-edge correctional facility. It would provide secure housing for the nation’s most dangerous criminals. However, the plan has drawn cautious responses from California lawmakers, who question its feasibility and cost.

The Rock was decommissioned as a federal prison in 1963. Since then, it has operated as a National Park Service attraction, drawing millions of visitors annually. Current estimates indicate the site generates $60 million in revenue each year as a tourist destination.

“Rebuilding Alcatraz into a modern prison is a stupid notion that would be nothing more than a waste of taxpayer dollars and an insult to the intelligence of the American people,” said Nancy Pelosi, former House speaker. She criticized the proposal as “absurd on its face and should be rejected outright.”

Logistical Concerns and Financial Hurdles

Opponents highlight challenges such as the island’s reliance on boat deliveries for supplies and the absence of essential utilities like running water and sewage systems. These factors, they argue, could inflate operational costs. The Bureau of Prisons previously noted that Alcatraz was three times more expensive to maintain than other federal facilities.

The proposed $1.7 billion investment in the Bureau of Prisons includes funds for the Alcatraz revival. Trump announced the initiative on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating he would “direct the Bureau of Prisons, alongside the Department of Justice, FBI, and Homeland Security, to reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt Alcatraz.”

A Legacy of Crime and Culture

Alcatraz began as a military fortress before becoming a federal prison in the 1930s. Its most infamous residents included gangsters such as Al Capone, Mickey Cohen, and George “Machine Gun” Kelly. The site has also featured in popular films, including “Escape from Alcatraz” with Clint Eastwood and “The Rock,” starring Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage.
