Fugitive mafia boss wanted for murder arrested in Amalfi Coast luxury villa
Italian authorities have captured a notorious mafia leader after more than a year of evading capture. Roberto Mazzarella, a high-ranking figure in the Camorra crime syndicate, was apprehended in the coastal town of Vietri sul Mare at a lavish seaside residence. This marks the end of a prolonged fugitive period, during which he had been on the run since January.
Italy’s Carabinieri military police confirmed that Mazzarella fled last January when he was set to face murder charges. The 48-year-old, now in custody, is regarded as a key player within the Naples-based organisation and has been flagged as one of the nation’s most wanted criminals.
Officers reported that Mazzarella was present with his spouse and two offspring at the time of the capture. The arrest occurred without resistance, as the family was found in the villa. His criminal network, known for counterfeit operations, has long been linked to large-scale banknote forgery.
The operation involved multiple patrol boats stationed along the coastline. A video released by the Carabinieri displayed heavily armed personnel entering the property. During the search, investigators uncovered three expensive timepieces, approximately €20,000 in cash, falsified paperwork, and smartphones.
Italian news agency Ansa revealed that Mazzarella had been residing at the location under an alias. Earlier this month, police also detained 16 individuals suspected of participating in cyber fraud schemes tied to his clan.
The arrest underscores ongoing efforts to dismantle the Mazzarella family’s influence. With the fugitive back in custody, authorities now face the challenge of tracing his alleged criminal activities and securing further convictions.
