Peru: Stadium Crush Results in One Fatality, Dozens Injured

A tragic incident unfolded at Alejandro Villanueva Stadium in Lima, Peru, on Friday night, leaving at least one person dead and 60 others injured, according to local authorities. The crush occurred during a gathering of fans for a “flag-waving event” ahead of a match between Alianza Lima and their rival, Universitario.

Officials confirmed that a wall collapsed within the stadium, but both the police and Alianza Lima denied the claim in separate statements. Fire brigades reported one fatality, though the cause of death remains under investigation. Rescue teams freed several individuals trapped in the south stands during the chaos.

Event Details and Fan Response

Fans of Alianza Lima had assembled at the stadium the night before their team’s game against Universitario. The crowd surged before the event officially began, leading to the stampede. The club issued a statement expressing sorrow for the victims and pledging full cooperation with investigators.

“We are fully and transparently collaborating with the competent authorities,” the club said, adding, “total transparency” in supporting the inquiry.

Local television aired footage from the scene, capturing the dense crowd in the south stands and an explosive display of fireworks. Other clips showed injured individuals seated inside the stadium. Lima officials noted that the flag-waving event lacked proper permits and security measures, raising concerns about preparedness.

Alianza Lima’s chief, Fernando Cabada, told media that such gatherings are routine and that this was the first time a stampede occurred during one. He emphasized that the event did not require tickets, which may have contributed to the rapid buildup of people.

The incident has sparked discussions about safety protocols at stadiums. While the exact cause of the collapse is still unclear, the tragedy highlights the risks of large crowds without adequate management.
