Man charged over fatal shooting of baby in pram in New York

A 21-year-old man faces murder charges following the tragic death of a seven-month-old infant who was shot while seated in a pushchair in Brooklyn, New York. Amuri Greene, the accused, was charged with three murder counts and one attempted murder charge after police linked him to the fatal incident on 1 April. CBS News, the BBC’s US partner, reported that Greene appeared in court on Friday and entered a not guilty plea.

Unintended victim in gang-related incident

Authorities believe the baby was an accidental casualty of a gang-related shooting. Police described footage showing two individuals on a motorcycle traveling against traffic in the Williamsburg area before one fired a shot. The suspect, identified as Greene, is thought to have been on the scooter’s rear, CBS reported. After the shooting, Greene was thrown from the vehicle and hospitalized, later placed in custody.

Matthew Rodriguez, 18, is the second suspect connected to the event. He was arrested in Pennsylvania and is awaiting formal charges. Officers claim Rodriguez was the scooter’s driver, who collided with oncoming traffic post-shooting and fled the scene. Greene also faces multiple weapons-related charges, including five counts of criminal possession of a weapon and two counts of attempted possession.

Community mourns at candlelight gathering

Family members and friends gathered on Friday evening for a candlelight vigil at the location of the shooting. The event underscored the community’s grief over the incident, which has sparked widespread concern about public safety in the neighborhood.
