Zhao thrashes Trump to win Tour Championship
Zhao Xintong Triumphs Over Trump in Tour Championship
China’s Zhao Xintong secured his first Tour Championship title in Manchester, defeating world number one Judd Trump 10-3. This victory marks a historic milestone, as he becomes the first player to claim all three Players Series events in a single season. The 29-year-old also added the £150,000 top prize to his tally, joining an elite group that includes Ronnie O’Sullivan and Trump as the only others to surpass £1m in earnings this year.
Zhao’s dominance was evident as he led 5-3 heading into the final session and then swept the next four frames to extend his lead to 9-3. This performance cemented his status as a formidable contender, with his six ranking finals triumphs now matching the achievements of legends like Steve Davis, Mark Williams, and Neil Robertson.
“This is a big moment for me. Judd Trump is my favorite player, and I’m thrilled to have won tonight,” Zhao said. “It may seem straightforward, but I was really nervous. Winning all six finals I’ve entered feels incredible.”
Despite Trump’s efforts to rally, including a pivotal eighth frame that briefly hinted at a dramatic conclusion, Zhao’s relentless performance ensured the match remained under his control. The Chinese player’s 91 and 98 breaks in consecutive frames highlighted his precision, while Trump struggled with errors, notably a missed black in the final frame.
“Zhao’s a great player and will stay in the top for a long time. If we don’t start playing well against him, he might end his career with 100 tournaments,” Trump remarked. “He’s been the best in the world over the past two months. I always enjoy the challenge, and now it’s time to work on improving my game.”
With just 13 days until the World Championship begins, Zhao’s victory sends a strong signal to rivals aiming to unseat him at the Crucible. Trump, who had previously beaten John Higgins 10-1 on Saturday—a career-low for the Scot—admitted his own shortcomings, citing a problematic cue tip as a factor in his struggles. “Disappointed I couldn’t perform today for whatever reason,” he added. “It was hard, but it’s my own fault for turning up with that tip.”
