MacIntyre misses out as Spaun clinches Texas Open

The 2024 Texas Open concluded with American JJ Spaun securing his second PGA Tour title, edging out Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre in a thrilling finale. MacIntyre, who had previously claimed two victories on the tour, fell short of capturing a third after a dramatic collapse on the final day.

Weather disrupts tournament rhythm

Heavy storms forced the third round to be delayed, leaving MacIntyre in a precarious position. Entering the final round, he held a one-shot lead at 14 under par, but the resumption on Sunday tested his resilience. Despite a strong performance, including an eagle on the par-four 17th, MacIntyre struggled to maintain his momentum.

Spaun, ranked 11th in the world, executed a decisive 67 in the final round to finish at 17 under par, securing a one-stroke triumph. MacIntyre, who played 30 holes on Sunday, missed a crucial birdie at the 18th, ending his campaign with a 72.

Key contenders and final-day drama

England’s Matt Wallace and American Michael Kim shared second place at 16 under par, joining MacIntyre in the runner-up standings. Wallace, who shot a 64 in the third round, followed it with a 68 to hold a strong position, while Kim matched the final-day surge of Spaun.

“It’s incredible how unpredictable golf can be,” Spaun remarked to Sky Sports. “I wasn’t in the form I hoped for after last season, but winning here means a lot. This place has been a big part of my journey, and the US Open title adds extra weight. I tried to return to the mindset that worked last year, but it’s been a tough process. Sticking to that approach finally paid off.”

The final round saw Spaun capitalize on three birdies on the back nine and his eagle on the 17th, while MacIntyre matched that feat but faltered on the 18th. A wayward second shot and a long putt from 30 feet proved costly, handing Spaun his second title at the San Antonio event.

Looking ahead to the Masters

With the Masters approaching, both Spaun and MacIntyre face a short recovery period. Spaun’s win marks a significant milestone, while MacIntyre’s near-miss underscores the challenges of maintaining consistency. The tournament’s outcome will be remembered for its dramatic twists and the impact of weather on the competition.

As the Masters looms, the focus shifts to Augusta, where the next major will test the resolve of golf’s top players. The Texas Open’s indoor evolution, which has gained traction, may reshape the sport’s landscape in the coming years.
