Lawes to leave Brive and make Prem return in England

After a decade and a half with Northampton Saints, Courtney Lawes is preparing to exit French club Brive following the conclusion of the current season. The 37-year-old flanker, who captained Saints to their first Prem Rugby title in a decade during 2024, has joined the Pro D2 team two years ago. Now, Brive has announced his decision to pursue a new challenge in England, with Leicester Tigers reportedly eyeing his services.

Lawes, who retired from international rugby after the 2023 World Cup in France, could rekindle his connection with the England squad if he returns to the Prem. The Rugby Football Union’s overseas rules stipulate that head coach Steve Borthwick can only select players for next year’s tournament in Australia who are based in England. This development signals a potential comeback for the veteran, who has previously represented his country in multiple World Cups.

“I’m going to give it my all until the end of the season to finish this adventure with CAB in the best possible way,” Lawes stated.

Brive’s president, Thierry Blandinieres, praised Lawes’ commitment, noting he arrived “with humility and ambition” and has “shown the full extent of his talent since his first day.” The player’s departure marks the end of a significant chapter in his career, having spent 17 years with Saints before this move.

Lawes earned his debut England cap in 2009 and has since participated in the 2011, 2015, and 2019 Rugby World Cups. His journey from Saints to Brive highlights his adaptability and dedication to the sport. As he steps back into English rugby, fans will be watching closely for any signs of a return to the national team.
