Ex-footballer Barton denies golf club attack
Joey Barton, a former professional footballer, has refuted accusations of assaulting a man during an incident at a Merseyside golf club. The 43-year-old, who was denied bail in a previous magistrates court session, made a virtual appearance at Liverpool Crown Court from Liverpool prison via video link. This was to prepare for the upcoming trial.
Barton is charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent alongside Gary O’Grady, 50, in the assault of Kevin Lynch, 51, who was a former non-league football manager. The attack occurred at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club on 8 March. Lynch is expected to face a seven-day trial starting on 1 September, following his remand into custody.
O’Grady also attended the court session but did not formally enter a plea. Barton, who played for clubs such as Manchester City, Newcastle United, QPR, Rangers, Burnley, and Marseille, made one appearance for England. Additionally, he managed Fleetwood Town during his career.
