Jeremy Bowen: Ceasefire Offers Temporary Relief
US-Iran Ceasefire Announced Just Before Trump’s Deadline
Radio 4, 10 minutes, Available for more than a year. The US and Iran have declared a ceasefire, effective shortly after midnight, just 90 minutes before Trump’s 20:00 EDT (01:00 BST) deadline for reaching a deal. This pause in hostilities, lasting two weeks, allows commercial vessels to pass freely through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who has mediated the talks, stated on Wednesday that the agreement is immediately binding. However, the deal remains conditional, leaving room for potential escalations if terms are not met.
“The ceasefire is a pause, not a resolution,” said Shehbaz Sharif, emphasizing that the pause could be short-lived.
International Editor Jeremy Bowen analyzes the development on Today’s Emma Barnett segment, noting that while the agreement provides temporary stability, it does not address the deeper political tensions between the nations.
