Croke Park could stage Fury v Joshua in September
Fight Details and Conditions
Plans are progressing for a highly anticipated heavyweight match between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, potentially set for September at Croke Park, Dublin. The iconic Gaelic games venue, known for its 80,000-capacity, is being considered as the host for the long-awaited showdown. However, the event hinges on Fury securing a victory in his upcoming bout against Russian Arslanbek Makhmudov this weekend and Joshua choosing not to participate in a preparatory fight this summer.
Fury has been inactive since December 2024, while Joshua’s last appearance was against Jake Paul last December. His recent injury occurred during a car accident in Nigeria, which tragically claimed the lives of two friends, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. Should Joshua opt for a warm-up fight, the main event might be shifted to the UK by year’s end.
“The real hope is that we will get Tyson Fury here later on in the year. That would be such a world-billing event that we would be able to facilitate a Katie Taylor fight here,” said Peter McKenna, chief executive of Croke Park.
McKenna highlighted that a Fury-Joshua matchup in Dublin could finally make Katie Taylor’s dream of competing in the stadium a reality. “A lot of stars need to align. Katie’s manager, her promoter, and Tyson Fury’s promoter all need to agree,” he added. “I am very confident that all three are coming to the sense that this is one of Ireland’s greatest sporting athletes and it would be such a ‘wow’ to have her here and for her to finish her career home.”
Promotional Support and Impact on Katie Taylor
The event in Dublin would be backed by Saudi-owned production company Sela and influential promoter Turki Alalshikh, co-founder of Zuffa Boxing. Despite upfront security costs posing a challenge, the expected high attendance from Fury and Joshua’s bouts would likely ease concerns about financial hurdles.
Katie Taylor, the two-weight undisputed champion, has already expressed her desire to conclude her career with a retirement fight in Dublin. BBC Sport has sought comment from her team to confirm details.
