Maguire on his major lows and belief he is still one of world’s best

Harry Maguire, the 33-year-old Manchester United defender, recently reflected on his career during an interview at the club’s training camp in Maynooth, a small town 20 miles outside Dublin. The session, which included a conversation with technical director Jason Wilcox, offered insights into his personal journey and resilience. Despite moments of doubt, Maguire remains confident in his place among the world’s elite defenders.

A defining moment of vulnerability

Maguire’s toughest test came in September 2023 during an England match against Scotland. Though he had already played well, an own goal during the game sparked public backlash. His mother, Zoe, swiftly responded on social media, calling the treatment “disgraceful and unacceptable.” Maguire recalled the incident with a wry smile, noting how his mum’s intervention came as a surprise: “I didn’t want her to, but she just said, ‘I’m doing it! I’m not listening to you!’”

“I think it probably does affect your family a little bit more in those moments. They’ve seen what we’re going through and how tough it is.”

Maguire acknowledged that such setbacks are part of the process. “That was probably the lowest point, but it’s definitely made me stronger,” he said. While he admits the experience was challenging, he insists it has not diminished his belief in his abilities. “I wouldn’t change where I’ve been or what I’ve been through,” he added.

Resilience and the captaincy loss

Two months prior to the Scotland game, Maguire had lost the captaincy under then-manager Erik ten Hag. The club had even considered selling him to West Ham before that decision. Reflecting on the situation, he stated: “Your first emotion is anger and disappointment, that’s natural. But I always thought unless you’re one of the superstars, you have ups and downs.”

“I just kept my head down. I have great self-belief, more importantly, that I’m a top player. That’s what helps me when things are tough.”

Maguire believes his mental fortitude allowed him to bounce back. “The form came back after losing the captaincy,” he explained. While he didn’t claim the move was beneficial, he emphasized that his confidence remained unshaken. “I think there’ll be a lot who want to close the book and start fresh,” he said. “But I’m the type of person who keeps pushing forward.”

A renewed chapter at Old Trafford

Despite the scrutiny, Maguire’s recent contract extension signals a turning point. The deal, which will keep him for an eighth season at the club and possibly a ninth, underscores his value. Manchester United opted to retain his experience and skill, even as Casemiro prepared to leave. “It’s a huge honour to play for this club,” he said. “To be here for eight years is a testament to myself.”

“My focus was getting it back into a competitive situation. I always wanted to be part of a squad I felt could compete.”

Maguire’s journey highlights his adaptability. After a difficult summer, the club’s decision to extend his stay reflects their faith in his contribution. “The recruitment went well last year, and I think it’s going to be a big summer,” he said. His journey, marked by both triumphs and setbacks, continues to shape his legacy at Old Trafford.
