Shades of Gascoigne – the rise of England’s Anderson

Elliot Anderson has made a significant impact this season, netting two goals across 42 appearances for both club and national team. Four years ago, he was instrumental in Bristol Rovers securing promotion from League Two, and since then, his reputation has steadily grown. This year might mark a pivotal moment, as he is expected to play a key role for England in the upcoming World Cup.

From Scotland to the Three Lions

Anderson’s journey to the England squad began with a connection to Scotland, thanks to his Glasgow-born grandmother. He was initially called up by Steve Clarke for the Euro 2024 qualifier against Cyprus but withdrew due to injury, eventually opting to represent England. His commitment paid off as he contributed to England’s European Under-21 Championship victory last summer, earning a place in the tournament’s best XI.

“I’ve matured as a person as well and thanks to the club for giving me that platform, going out there and letting me do my stuff,” said Anderson, who moved from Newcastle for £35m in 2024.

Anderson’s ability to adapt and perform has been evident, especially during Nottingham Forest’s challenging season. Despite four managers and the team’s struggle in the Premier League, he has remained a consistent force. In a vital 3-0 win at Tottenham, he created three chances, completed 38 passes, won possession nine times, and made six tackles—figures that outperformed his teammates.

Key Contributions and Stats

His stats this season highlight his growing influence: 2,002 passes at an 85.8% success rate, 259 possessions won, and 195 ground duels secured. Anderson ranks among the top passers in the league and has covered over 5,400 meters of running, trailing only a select group of players. His tireless work ethic and positional awareness have drawn praise from coaches and teammates alike.

Anderson’s development has also been supported by former Stoke midfielder Glenn Whelan, who worked with him during his 2022 loan at Bristol Rovers. Whelan’s mentorship likely played a role in Anderson’s transition to the England squad, where he has now earned his fifth senior cap. Ahead of the Japan clash at Wembley, he faces a crucial test after being rested against Uruguay.

“In players’ careers, you never know where you’re going to be. Moving from your hometown is a big step, and it was definitely something I needed to do,” Anderson added. “It has turned out really well, so I’m happy I made that step.”

Speculation about his future has intensified, with Manchester City reportedly interested in signing him this summer. However, Anderson remains focused on continuing his form for Forest, emphasizing his dedication to the team. “I’m just focusing on my football at the moment and performing,” he said. “That’s all that’s on my mind.”
