India news: Marco Rubio to visit India for trade talks
India News: US Secretary of State’s May Visit to Focus on Trade and Quad Alliance
India’s diplomatic efforts are set to gain momentum as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio prepares for a May trip. The itinerary highlights discussions on trade and security, aiming to mitigate the effects of the ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran. This development comes as India’s petroleum minister is currently in Qatar, and the foreign minister is scheduled to meet in the UAE on Saturday.
Quad Alliance and Regional Trade Implications
The Quad, or Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, comprising the US, India, Japan, and Australia, seeks to uphold a “free and open Indo-Pacific.” This goal has become more urgent following Middle East tensions that disrupted regional trade. India-bound crude tankers have already crossed the Strait of Hormuz, signaling continued energy flows amid geopolitical instability.
High-Level Diplomatic Exchanges
Before Rubio’s arrival, India’s foreign secretary Vikram Misri engaged in meetings in Washington. On April 8, the day a ceasefire was announced, Misri met with US Under Secretary of State Allison Hooker. They addressed bilateral priorities and shared insights on Middle East developments. US ambassador Sergio Gor, who welcomed Misri to the White House, emphasized the significance of their collaboration.
“Welcome to the White House, Vikram Misri! Our meeting focused on strengthening ties, particularly in trade, critical minerals, defense, and the Quad. Secretary Rubio eagerly anticipates his visit next month,” Gor stated, sharing a photo of the trio.
Domestic Political Dynamics
India’s political landscape is active during election season. On Thursday, two states and a union territory held assembly elections, with more key states slated to vote in April. The ruling BJP faces challenges in managing rising food and cooking gas prices, while opposition parties aim to leverage public sentiment.
