Germany: Police Suspect Antisemitism in Israeli Restaurant Attack

Authorities in Munich suspect the attack was driven by anti-Semitic motives, with restaurant proprietors supporting this view. No one was injured, though multiple windows were shattered, resulting in thousands of euros in damages. The incident occurred overnight, with assailants hurling pyrotechnic devices into the establishment.

The assault took place on Hessstrasse in the Maxvorstadt district, a central area near the city’s historic core and main train station. Emergency responders were alerted at around 12:45 a.m. on Friday, describing three distinct explosions. Police confirmed the windows were deliberately damaged and that pyrotechnics were thrown inside, though the exact number of perpetrators remains unknown.

“There were no direct threats in the days leading up to the attack,” stated the restaurant’s operators to the German dpa news agency. They expressed confidence in continuing business as usual, despite the incident. Grigori Dratva, an employee and the owner’s brother-in-law, added, “We won’t be intimidated. We’re reopening.”

The Central Council of Jews in Germany highlighted the attack on Instagram, calling it a “good moment to display solidarity” with the Eclipse restaurant. This follows a rise in anti-Semitic crimes since the October 7, 2023 attacks on Israel, according to the BfV domestic intelligence service. Recent conflicts in Iran, Lebanon, and the broader Middle East have intensified such incidents.

The European Rabbis’ Conference, based in Munich, also warned of a persistent pattern. “This attack is not isolated, but part of a dangerous trend since October 7, 2023,” said the group’s General Secretary, Gady Gronich. “Munich must remain a safe haven for Jews. A firm stance against antisemitism, with strict penalties, is essential to prevent recurrence.” To view this video, enable JavaScript and upgrade to an HTML5-compatible browser.
