Fernandez Sorry but Will Miss Man City – Rosenior
Chelsea’s midfielder Enzo Fernandez, who joined from Benfica in 2023, will be absent for Sunday’s Premier League clash against Manchester City, according to head coach Liam Rosenior. The Argentine had apologised for recent remarks about Madrid but still faces a two-match suspension. Fernandez was banned by the club last week after an interview during the international break where he expressed his admiration for the city of Madrid.
Agent’s Remarks and Hope for Reduced Penalty
Javier Pastore, Fernandez’s agent, stated this week that “we cleared the air” with Chelsea following the player’s absence in the 7-0 FA Cup victory over Port Vale. The agent hoped the two-match ban would be adjusted to a single game. However, Rosenior confirmed the club is sticking to its original decision, even after Fernandez’s apology.
“I had three or four [conversations] with Enzo,” said Rosenior. “He’s apologised to me, he’s apologised to the club, and we’ll deal with that after a massive game on Sunday. How will Fernandez issue be resolved? Dropping Fernandez – a sign of Rosenior’s authority or a big risk?”
Rosenior described the meeting as a “serious discussion” regarding a “major issue,” stressing that he does not question Fernandez’s character or personal qualities. “We’ve made a sanction, we’ve made a decision – I made a decision – and what I want for Enzo is for him to come here and have an outstanding career,” he added.
Chelsea currently sit sixth in the Premier League table, a point behind Liverpool, who hold the fifth spot and the final Champions League qualification position. Rosenior asserted he wasn’t “shooting myself in the foot” by suspending Fernandez, noting that there are still “challenges” to be addressed before the midfielder can return to action.
As the former Strasbourg manager pointed out, Reece James, Trevoh Chalobah, and Levi Colwill are also sidelined for the match at Stamford Bridge. Rosenior remains focused on preparing the team for the upcoming fixtures, ensuring players are fully engaged in the campaign.
