Palestinian Shot Dead During Israeli Settler Attack on Occupied West Bank Village

On Wednesday evening, a 28-year-old Palestinian man, Alaa Khalid Subeih, was killed in an attack by Israeli settlers in Tayasir, a village in the northern West Bank. According to a family member, Subeih was defending his plastic greenhouse when he was shot by an Israeli settler. The Israeli military later stated that he was an off-duty soldier who had been accused of throwing stones at settlers, leading to the fatal confrontation.

Settler Violence and International Law

Tayasir has seen frequent clashes with settlers, who have been active in the region. Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank are classified as illegal under international law. The incident occurred amid growing concerns about settlers’ unchecked actions, with ex-security officials warning of “government-sponsored Jewish terrorism” escalating in the area.

“He was one of the finest young men in the village, one of the most decent, one of the best – a calm, respectful person who had no problems with anyone,” said Saeb Subeih, the victim’s relative.

Subeih’s family reported that his body has not yet been returned by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). They emphasized that the recovery of his remains is crucial for the family’s emotional closure. Meanwhile, Ajith Sunghay, a UN Human Rights Office representative, noted that the killing followed a day of violence, including injuries to a Palestinian man and rock-throwing exchanges between settlers and locals.

The UN documented a surge in settler attacks this year, with 148 incidents in January, 191 in February, and 206 in March. Sunghay suggested that the ongoing war in Iran has shifted attention away from the West Bank, allowing settlers to operate with less scrutiny. He also pointed out the blurring line between settlers and the Israeli military, as many settlers are also soldiers.

Conflicting Accounts from the IDF

Following the incident, the IDF issued a statement in Hebrew labeling Subeih as a “terrorist.” This claim was echoed in some Israeli media outlets. However, the English version of the statement described him as a “civilian.” The IDF has not clarified the discrepancy, leaving questions about the rationale for accusing him of being a terrorist.

“An Israeli and a Palestinian civilian were injured and evacuated for medical treatment,” the IDF stated. “Initial inquiry showed an off-duty soldier fired toward a Palestinian after he threw stones at Israeli civilians.”

A BBC correspondent reported that an ambulance crew from the Palestinian Red Crescent was barred from entering Tayasir by IDF soldiers. They were kept from accessing the village for seven hours, during which their phones and ID cards were taken. A local official later confirmed that Subeih’s body was being held by the military.

Former Israeli security leaders recently criticized the government’s handling of settler activities, calling it a “fatal strategic blow to national security.” In a letter to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, they urged action against the rising tide of violence by settlers, who they claimed were operating with impunity. The situation highlights ongoing tensions in the region as the Israeli military and settlers continue to interact in volatile conditions.
