California governor candidate Eric Swalwell denies sexual assault allegations

Accusations and Counterclaims

Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell, a prominent contender in California’s gubernatorial race, has rejected claims of sexual misconduct from former staff members. The allegations, which include incidents ranging from harassment to rape, were highlighted in a statement he issued following recent revelations. “These accusations are untrue and arise just days before a critical election,” he asserted, emphasizing his position against the current frontrunner.

“For nearly 20 years, I have served the public – as a prosecutor and a congressman – and have always protected women. I will defend myself with the facts and, if needed, pursue legal action,” Swalwell declared.

Opposition and Calls for Withdrawal

His campaign has faced pressure from both rivals and allies, with several notable Democrats urging him to exit the race. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries joined calls for Swalwell to step down, as did other supporters. The primary election is set for 2 June, and the winner is anticipated to become the next governor in a state heavily dominated by Democratic voters.

The initial allegation surfaced in The San Francisco Chronicle on Friday, shared by a former staff member who described inappropriate remarks and advances. The woman recounted waking up naked in Swalwell’s hotel room in September 2019 with vague memories of the prior night. She later mentioned struggling to recall events but remembers telling him “no” and pushing him away at a gala encounter five years later. Text messages and a former boyfriend’s account support her claims.

Media and Legal Responses

CNN added to the controversy on the same day, publishing accusations from four additional women who worked under Swalwell. His legal team reportedly issued cease-and-desist letters to two of the accusers on Thursday. Prominent figures such as Senator Adam Schiff and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi echoed demands for transparency, stating that “this sensitive matter must be thoroughly investigated with full accountability.”

In a Facebook video message, Swalwell reiterated his denials, addressing the public directly. “I am not claiming to be flawless or saintly,” he said. “I have made judgment errors in the past, but those are between me and my wife. To her, I offer my deepest apology for placing her in this situation.”
