Nigeria: Many dead after military bombs village market
A bombing at a market in Yobe state, located in northeastern Nigeria, has caused significant loss of life and injuries. The exact details of the incident remain under investigation. The Nigerian military stated the attack was a “precision” strike targeting a known terrorist stronghold.
Amnesty International Reports Casualties
Amnesty International disclosed that more than 100 people were killed in the airstrike on a Jilli market, based on accounts from survivors. “Witnesses reported three military jets attacking the market yesterday. The emergency ward at Geidam General Hospital has treated 35 individuals with severe injuries,” the human rights organization noted in an online statement.
Nigeria’s military confirmed the strike occurred near the abandoned village of Jilli, identifying it as a “carefully planned and intelligence-driven operation” against a terrorist logistics hub. The attack was believed to have taken place on Saturday. The country continues its prolonged conflict with Boko Haram and other extremist groups.
Victim Accounts and Evidence
“We are in touch with people at the scene, and we spoke with the hospital,” explained Isa Sanusi, Amnesty International’s Nigeria director, during an interview with the AP news agency. “We also interviewed the person overseeing casualties and the victims themselves. We have photographs of the injured, which include children,” he added.
The incident has intensified concerns over civilian casualties in the region’s ongoing security operations. A video of the event is available, but viewers must enable JavaScript and use an HTML5-compatible browser to access it.
