Four teens arrested over fatal stabbing of boy, 16
Four Teenagers Arrested in Connection with 16-Year-Old’s Fatal Stabbing
Cambridgeshire Police have detained four teenagers following a fatal stabbing incident that claimed the life of a 16-year-old boy. The call to the authorities came shortly before 7:00 PM BST on Sunday, reporting an attack in Riseholme, a location close to the Ortongate Shopping Centre in Peterborough.
Incident Details
The stabbing occurred near the Ortongate Shopping Centre, prompting nearby St John’s Church School to close temporarily due to a “serious incident.” In an email shared with the BBC, the school noted that police were “currently processing a site in close proximity to the school,” which influenced the decision to shut its doors.
Suspects and Charges
A 15-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man, both from Peterborough, were arrested on suspicion of murder. Two additional teenagers, aged 16 and 17, face charges of aiding an offender. The 16-year-old girl, also from March, is accused of possessing a bladed article. All four remain in custody.
Police Presence and Community Response
Law enforcement has maintained a large cordon around the shopping centre since Sunday night. This security measure persists on Monday, with plans for increased patrols in the days ahead. Residents have placed flowers near the cordoned area as a gesture of solidarity.
“This is a tragic incident which has resulted in the death of a young man,” stated Det Ch Insp Richard Stott from the Beds, Cambs and Herts Major Crime Unit. “We are in contact with his family and keeping them updated. While we understand the death will be concerning for local people, we do not believe this was a random attack. There will be a significant police presence in the area over coming days.”
The Ortongate Shopping Centre continues to operate normally, though its rear car park is temporarily closed. Authorities have urged anyone with information or home CCTV footage to reach out to police. For story suggestions related to Peterborough, contact the BBC directly.
