How crucial is 99-cap Walsh to the Lionesses?
England’s midfield maestro Keira Walsh is poised to notch her 100th appearance for her country when facing Spain at Wembley on Tuesday. The 29-year-old has been a cornerstone of Sarina Wiegman’s squad, pivotal in securing consecutive European Championships. With Arsenal defender Leah Williamson’s readiness uncertain, Walsh may step into the captain’s role for the match, scheduled at 19:00 GMT.
“Obviously it’s a very exciting moment. We don’t know the team for sure yet, but when I first started playing football, I never imagined this would happen,” Walsh remarked.
Walsh, who first donned the England jersey in November 2017, recalls her debut under modest circumstances—before a crowd of under 10,000 spectators at Colchester Community Stadium, where she contributed to a 5-0 victory over Kazakhstan. Reflecting on the transformation since then, she noted: “Discussing this with the team recently, it’s remarkable how far we’ve come. When I earned my first cap, the stadium was nearly empty, and we were playing against Kazakhstan. Tomorrow, Wembley will be packed with 75,000 fans, and we’ll be up against the world’s top team. That’s a testament to the women’s game’s evolution.”

Walsh’s impact on the team has been evident from the outset. She was entrusted with the captaincy on her seventh appearance in 2018, a nod to her early promise. Her heroics were highlighted during Euro 2022, where she orchestrated a decisive pass for Ella Toone’s opening goal in the final. Known for her technical flair and expansive passing, Walsh has been a regular in Wiegman’s strategy, missing only one game at the 2023 World Cup due to a knee injury.
“I watched her before joining the England setup and was impressed by her skill. She’s tactical, precise, and has incredible vision. When I arrived, I realized she was even better than I anticipated,” said Wiegman.
Walsh’s steadfast presence has been a constant throughout her career, especially alongside her close friend and teammate Leah Williamson. The Lionesses captain, who has been by her side since youth tournaments, described her as “a great person to have in your corner” and lauded her reliability. “Her playstyle is subtle yet essential to our team’s success. If Keira is performing well, the entire squad thrives,” Williamson shared in a Women’s Football Weekly podcast.
Off the field, the duo often share accommodations and bond during travels. Their families are intertwined, and Williamson credits her for personal growth. “Keira’s honest and expressive—she says what she thinks, even when it’s hard to hear. But her perspective on life, culture, and relationships has taught me so much,” Williamson added.
Walsh, meanwhile, has been honored with an MBE in the King’s New Year Honours list for 2026, a recognition of her contributions to the sport. She remains focused on the game, embracing the milestone with humility. “I don’t like being the center of attention, so I try to stay grounded. Whether it’s the first or the 100th cap, the passion for the game stays the same,” she said.
