England ‘Feckless, Reckless and Legless’ in Ashes
England’s recent Ashes campaign in Australia came to an end with a 4-1 loss, marking their fourth consecutive away series defeat. The tour has been labeled as a disaster, with the editor of the esteemed Wisden Almanack, Lawrence Booth, delivering a sharp critique in the editor’s notes of the 163rd edition.
“England arrived for the Ashes with ambition to make history, yet they were laughed out of town,” Booth wrote. “They were feckless, reckless and legless. A series meant to define an era, as Brendon McCullum called it ‘the biggest of all our lives,’ turned into a display of half-hearted effort. What a waste. What a shame.”
Booth highlighted the team’s poor performance on the field, combined with unpreparedness and a reputation for a relaxed attitude towards alcohol. He noted that the incident involving white-ball captain Harry Brook, who was punched by a nightclub bouncer on the eve of a one-day game in Wellington during October, was only disclosed after the fifth Ashes Test in January.
“Three weeks before the Perth Test provided ample time to address Brook’s altercation publicly and reinforce the players’ responsibility in Australia,” Booth added. “Four years after a prior Ashes struggle sparked discussions about a drinking culture, the situation feels depressingly similar.”
Despite the tour’s shortcomings, England’s Test captain Ben Stokes, head coach Brendon McCullum, and director of cricket Rob Key retained their positions following ECB’s review of the series. Meanwhile, Wisden’s annual awards recognized players from India and Australia. Four Indian cricketers were honored for their role in the thrilling 2-2 Test series against England: captain Shubman Gill, wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, and fast bowler Mohammed Siraj.
Haseeb Hameed, the sole domestic player on the list, was acknowledged for his leadership and performance in Nottinghamshire’s County Championship victory. Australia’s Mitchell Starc and Deepti Sharma from India were named as the world’s leading men’s and women’s cricketers, respectively. Cricket news delivered directly to your phone.
