Cardiff City damages claim over Emiliano Sala death dismissed
Cardiff City’s £100m Damages Claim Over Emiliano Sala’s Death Rejected
A French judicial body has rejected Cardiff City’s lawsuit seeking over £100 million in damages following the tragic demise of footballer Emiliano Sala. The Argentine striker, 28, and pilot David Ibbotson lost their lives when the Piper Malibu aircraft they were traveling in crashed into the English Channel on 21 January 2019.
Sala was preparing to sign with Cardiff City, then competing in the Premier League, from FC Nantes in a £15 million transfer deal. The club’s case centered on the argument that Sala’s presence could have secured their continued participation in the top tier of English football. However, the court ruled that Cardiff was not entitled to compensation from Nantes for the loss of the player.
In addition to dismissing the claim, the court mandated Cardiff City to cover approximately £400,000 in legal expenses and moral damages awarded to FC Nantes. This marks the latest decision in an ongoing legal battle, with the ruling confirming the Welsh team’s damages claim was unfounded.
