Iran War: IMF Slashes Global Growth Forecast
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has issued a stark warning that the global economy could face significant setbacks due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and energy supply disruptions. This comes as tensions escalate between the US, Israel, and Iran, with the IMF revising its growth projections in response to the crisis.
Political Tensions Amid Escalation
Italy’s political landscape has also been affected by the war, with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni signaling a shift in her stance toward the US and Israel. Earlier this week, she criticized US President Donald Trump for his aggressive rhetoric against Pope Leo XIV, calling the attacks “unacceptable.” In contrast, Trump accused Meloni of lacking courage, stating,
“I’m shocked at her. I thought she had courage, but I was wrong.”
Global Growth Projections Revised
Following the outbreak of the US-Israeli conflict with Iran, the IMF updated its economic forecasts. The agency now projects global growth at 3.1%, a 2% drop from its January estimate of 3.3%. For 2025, growth was initially expected at 3.4%, but the war has caused a slowdown. The eurozone’s growth rate is anticipated to fall to 1.1%, a decline from 1.4%. Germany and France each face a 3% reduction in their growth forecasts, while the UK’s economy is projected to grow by just 0.8%, the most severe cut among G7 nations. The US, too, sees a slight decrease to 2.3%.
Regional Impacts and Russia’s Gains
The Middle East is expected to experience a sharper economic downturn, with Iran’s GDP projected to contract by 6.1%. Meanwhile, Russia stands to benefit the most, with the IMF predicting a 1.1% growth rate. French President Emmanuel Macron has called for renewed talks between Iran and the US, emphasizing the need to
“clear up misunderstandings and avoid further escalation.”
He also urged the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz “unconditionally” to ensure free navigation. Macron highlighted the importance of maintaining the ceasefire in Lebanon and supporting a multilateral mission to secure the strait.
Italy’s Shift in Foreign Policy
Italy has announced the suspension of automatic renewals for its defense pact with Israel, citing the war’s escalation. The decision follows growing concerns over Israel’s actions in Lebanon, including the damage to an Italian UN peacekeeper vehicle. The incident led to diplomatic friction, with Italy summoning Israel’s ambassador in protest. This move reflects a broader reassessment of alliances as the conflict continues to unfold.
