Baby found under floorboards may be 300 years old

Baby Found Under Floorboards May Date Back 300 Years

In a baffling discovery, a male infant’s remains were uncovered beneath the floorboards of a building in Bishop Auckland, sparking speculation that the child could have lived as early as the 18th century. The event, detailed during an inquest, adds layers to the mystery surrounding his untimely demise.

Discovery Details

Contractors working on a renovation project at Fore Bondgate in Bishop Auckland stumbled upon the skeleton in July 2024. The location of the find, along with the historical context of the property, has raised questions about how the remains ended up in such an unexpected place.

“A small skeleton of a baby was discovered under the floorboards,” reported a Durham Police officer to the coroner. The officer added that the force was alerted on 29 July 2024, following the contractor’s find.

Investigation Findings

The inquest in Crook, County Durham, revealed that the baby was full-term but no definitive conclusion about stillbirth was reached. Carbon dating placed his existence between 1726 and 1812, despite being wrapped in a 1910 newspaper edition. This discrepancy has fueled debate over the timeline of the building’s construction and the baby’s burial.

Further analysis uncovered a brown twine wrapped three times around the child’s neck, alongside the 1910 newspaper. The coroner explained that carbon testing was conducted in stages, first confirming the remains predated the nuclear age, which began in 1945. Subsequent tests narrowed the likely timeframe of the baby’s life and death to the 1726–1812 range.

Funeral Plans and Next Steps

Authorities have arranged for a funeral in Bishop Auckland cemetery, with the child to be laid to rest by a local undertaker later this month. The inquest will reconvene on 18 May to continue the investigation, leaving the community with lingering questions about the infant’s origins and fate.
