Ultra-marathon champion dies while running Cape Wrath trail
Ultra-Marathon Champion Dies During Cape Wrath Trail Attempt
A 35-year-old runner from Dumfries, David Parrish, has passed away while competing on the Cape Wrath trail in the Scottish Highlands. The event, spanning 234 miles (376km), stretches from Fort William to the remote Cape Wrath. Parrish aimed to set a new record for the fastest male finisher in the race, which is renowned as one of the toughest trails in the UK.
Parrish, a former Royal Marine, was discovered in the Kintail region on Saturday evening at approximately 22:25. Police Scotland confirmed there were no signs of foul play, with his family notified of the incident. The trail traverses challenging terrains such as Lochaber, Knoydart, Applecross, and Torridon, demanding endurance and resilience from participants.
His latest endeavor was not just a personal challenge but also a fundraiser for Scottish Mountain Rescue. This initiative honored his late friend, Luke Ireland, a 20-year-old Royal Marine who died in November 2014 while running in the Glen Cova mountains of Angus. On his fundraising page, Parrish highlighted the dedication of rescue volunteers, who are “365 days a year available to respond to emergencies in Scotland’s mountains and remote areas.”
Thousands have contributed to the cause, with tributes pouring in for Parrish’s contributions. He had previously won the Cape Wrath Trail race in 2023, despite only competing in ultra-marathons for a short time. Before his military service, Parrish began running in his late teens and transitioned to competitive events in his early 20s, participating in local 5km and 10km races.
After leaving the Royal Marines, he joined Parkruns and completed the Cape Wrath Trail in 2021. Running served as his escape from the rigors of the job, a habit he maintained even after retiring. His 2023 race was captured by No Limits Photography, whose owners praised his “joyful presence” and “inspirational spirit” in the world of ultra-marathons. “The world and the sport will be a far lesser place without him,” they reflected.
Background and Legacy
David Parrish’s journey in running began during his teenage years, evolving into a competitive career in his early twenties. His membership in the Dumfries Running Club saw him crowned club champion in 2022. The trail, which he had already conquered in 2023, became a symbol of his commitment to both sport and community support.
“David has always been such a joyful person and an inspirational ultra marathon athlete to spend time with,” said Harriet D’Alessio and Christiaan Le Roux, owners of No Limits Photography.
His efforts to raise funds for Scottish Mountain Rescue underscored his connection to the region’s rugged landscapes and the people who navigate them. The tragedy of his death adds a poignant chapter to the legacy of both his athletic achievements and his friendship with Luke Ireland.
