Turkey school shooting injures 16, teenage attacker dead
Tragedy at Turkish Vocational School: 16 Injured, Teen Shooter Dead
A former student unleashed a random volley of gunfire at a vocational high school in Siverek, Sanliurfa province, before ending his own life, according to local authorities. The attack, which occurred on Tuesday, left 16 individuals wounded, including 10 students, four teachers, a cafeteria worker, and a police officer. Most of the injured were treated at the local hospital, while five teachers and students were transported to the regional capital for more severe cases.
Details of the Attack
The perpetrator, identified as a 16-year-old former student born in 2007, fired from a pump-action shotgun. Governor Hasan Sildak stated the shooter “randomly opened fire in the corridor” before taking his own life. Footage from the school shows students rushing in panic, fleeing through hallways and exiting onto the street. Videos also depict the attacker moving through the building while firing shots.
“He suddenly entered the classroom and fired. He didn’t say anything. He fired four or five times. Two people were hit. He then went into the next classroom,” said a student interviewed by the state-run Anadolu Agency.
Investigation and Motive
Authorities have yet to determine the shooter’s motive, though they confirmed the suspect had no prior criminal convictions. However, media reports suggest he may have posted ominous threats on social media before the incident. Police described the attack as an isolated event and confirmed the school is now secure. A comprehensive investigation is ongoing to uncover details.
Despite the tragic event, school shootings are uncommon in Turkey, where strict gun laws and severe penalties for illegal possession help keep such occurrences rare.
