Kanye West Postpones French Show Amid Political Backlash

Kanye West, who recently adopted the stage name Ye, has delayed his performance in Marseille, France, following growing political pressure. The event was originally set for June 11 at the Stade Velodrome, but the decision to reschedule was made after public figures criticized his remarks. This comes after the artist’s UK visa was denied earlier this year, which resulted in the cancellation of his Wireless Festival appearance.

Visa Denial Sparks Controversy

Ye’s entry into the United Kingdom was rejected due to his history of antisemitic comments. The Home Office cited his presence as “not conducive to the public good,” prompting the cancellation of his headline slot at the Wireless Festival in July. This latest postponement follows similar actions in France, where leaders have voiced concerns over his impact.

“After much thought and consideration, it is my sole decision to postpone my show in Marseille, France until further notice,” Ye wrote on social media platform X.

In Marseille, Mayor Benoit Payan condemned the event, stating the city would not “be a showcase for those who promote hatred and unapologetic Nazism.” He added, “Kanye West is not welcome at the Velodrome,” in a separate X post. France’s Interior Minister Laurent Nunez also supported the move, expressing “very determined” opposition to the concert to Politico.

Ye’s antisemitism allegations have persisted for years, including his 2022 release of the song “Heil Hitler,” which praised Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler. He had previously sold merchandise with Nazi symbols on his website. Despite this, Ye recently attempted to address the issue with a January advertisement in the Wall Street Journal titled “To Those I’ve Hurt,” where he apologized for his behavior and called his comments “a result of mental illness.”

While Ye claimed he “loves Jewish people,” the backlash continues. The French postponement follows the UK’s earlier cancellation, highlighting ongoing tensions around his public image and influence.
