Trump warns that UK trade deal ‘can always be changed’
Trump Indicates UK Trade Agreement ‘Can Be Adjusted’ at Any Time
US President Donald Trump asserted that the trade pact with the United Kingdom ‘can be adjusted at any time.’ During a conversation with Sky News on Wednesday, he emphasized that the arrangement was favorable, noting it was ‘better than I had to.’ However, he also hinted at potential modifications, leaving room for future revisions.
Strained Relations Amid Middle East Tensions
Trump has consistently criticized Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer for his stance on the US-Israel conflict against Iran, which began in late February. The leader of the Free Democrats accused Starmer’s administration of being ‘unhelpful’ when the US needed support. This friction has recently affected the dynamics between the two nations’ leaders, despite Trump’s acknowledgment of the royal visit as a positive event.
“It’s the relationship where when we asked them for help, they were not there. When we needed them, they were not there. When we didn’t need them, they were not there. And they still aren’t there.”
When pressed about the nature of the US-UK alliance, Trump initially responded with confusion, asking, ‘With who?’ After clarification, he described the partnership as ‘sad’ but reaffirmed that it had ‘been better.’ He also mentioned his approval of Starmer’s leadership, though he labeled the country’s immigration and energy policies as ‘insane.’
“And we gave them a good trade deal. Better than I had to. Which can always be changed.”
Historical Context of Trade Negotiations
Earlier this year, the UK became the first nation to finalize a tariff agreement with Trump following his return to the presidency. This deal involved reducing import duties on cars, aluminium, and steel. Despite recent tensions, Trump downplayed the impact of these disputes on the upcoming state visit by King Charles and Queen Camilla, stating that the monarch’s involvement would not be influenced by political disagreements.
Looking ahead to the royal state visit in late April, Trump expressed enthusiasm, stating, ‘Just being with him. I’ve known him for a long time. He’s wonderful.’ This sentiment underscores his personal rapport with the king, even as he critiques the UK’s political choices on the global stage.
