South Africa names new US ambassador amid tense Trump ties

South Africa Appoints Experienced Afrikaner Diplomat as US Envoy Amid Strained Relations with Trump Administration

South Africa has named Roelf Meyer, a well-known Afrikaner politician, as its new ambassador to the United States. This decision follows a year of vacancy in the position, which occurred during a period of friction between the country and Donald Trump’s administration. The choice reflects the ongoing diplomatic challenges with the US, particularly over accusations of a “white genocide” against Afrikaners.

President Cyril Ramaphosa’s spokesperson, Vicent Magwenya, confirmed the appointment in a statement to the Associated Press and other media outlets. “I can confirm that President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Mr. Roelf Meyer as South Africa’s Ambassador to the US,” he stated, effective immediately.

Political Career and Apartheid Legacy

Roelf Meyer served as a member of parliament from 1979 to 1997, including a stint as defense minister under F.W. De Klerk’s National Party during the late apartheid era. After the transition to democracy, he played a pivotal role in the negotiations that ended apartheid and led to Nelson Mandela’s historic election as the country’s first Black leader in 1994.

Meyer later became a key negotiator in discussions that concluded apartheid and facilitated Nelson Mandela’s election as South Africa’s inaugural Black leader in 1994. He was also part of Mandela’s first post-apartheid government, serving as constitutional development minister from 1994 to 1996.

Trump’s Accusations and Diplomatic Tensions

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized South Africa’s ANC-led government, citing “white genocide” as a major grievance. During a 2025 visit, he directly confronted Ramaphosa over the claim, arguing that the administration was fostering racial hostility toward Afrikaners.

“I can confirm that President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Mr. Roelf Meyer as South Africa’s Ambassador to the US,” said Vicent Magwenya, Ramaphosa’s spokesperson.

In response, the US has introduced a specialized migration and asylum process for Afrikaners facing discrimination in South Africa. This policy has drawn attention amid the growing divide between the two nations.

Meyer’s predecessor, Ebrahim Rasool, was expelled in May of the previous year after criticizing the Trump administration’s handling of South Africa. He accused the US of “projecting white victimhood as a dog whistle,” a remark that sparked some backlash in South Africa for deviating from standard diplomatic protocols.

Broader Diplomatic Disputes

Relations between South Africa and the US have further deteriorated due to South Africa’s decision to pursue an International Court of Justice case against Israel, alleging genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. Trump boycotted the G20 Leaders Summit hosted by South Africa in 2025 and has not invited the country to the US-led G20 meetings in Miami this December.

Additionally, South Africa’s most prominent white expatriate, Elon Musk, has openly criticized his homeland’s government. His recent frustrations over barriers to access for Starlink have intensified, with Musk claiming the obstacles are racially motivated.
