Pope criticises ‘tyrants’ who spend billions on wars, days after Trump spat

Pope Condemns ‘Tyrants’ Fueling Global Conflict Amid Tensions with Trump

During his recent trip to Cameroon, Pope Leo issued sharp criticism against leaders who prioritize military spending over humanitarian needs, calling them “tyrants” responsible for widespread destruction. His remarks highlighted the devastation caused by ongoing conflicts, as he addressed crowds in a region plagued by insurgency. “Billions are spent on wars, yet resources for healing and education are scarce,” the Pope stated, emphasizing the imbalance in resource allocation.

Historical Dispute with Trump Adds Context

These comments follow a heated exchange with US President Donald Trump, who had previously mocked the Pope on social media. In a 2024 post, Trump derided Pope Leo, saying, “Leo should get his act together as Pope.” The tension arose after the Pope expressed concerns about Trump’s threat to “destroy a whole civilisation” if Iran failed to meet US demands in the Strait of Hormuz dispute.

“The masters of war pretend not to know that destruction happens in an instant, while rebuilding requires a lifetime,” the Pope remarked, underscoring his view of perpetual conflict as a cycle of harm.

Leo, the first US-born pope, has consistently challenged foreign policies, including the Trump administration’s stance on immigration. His critique of military interventions in Iran and the Middle East has drawn both praise and criticism. The current visit to Africa, spanning 11 cities across four nations, marks his second major international trip since taking office. This journey underscores the growing influence of Catholicism on the continent, where over 288 million people identify as adherents, according to 2024 statistics.
