Germany News: Teacher Group Calls for Immediate Measures Against Classroom Violence

A coalition of German educators has called for urgent measures to address a sharp increase in student aggression. Reports highlight a growing concern over incidents of violence in schools and hallways, prompting the group to emphasize the need for decisive action. Meanwhile, the Greens have proposed a universal speed cap on primary highways as a strategy to enhance fuel efficiency.

Parental Benefits Decline Mirrors Falling Birth Rates

Recent statistics show a continued decline in the number of German citizens utilizing parental benefit programs. The Federal Statistical Office reported a 3.7% drop in recipients in 2025, bringing the total to 1.61 million—nearly 14% fewer than in 2021. This trend aligns with a decrease in birth rates, though women still represent three times as many beneficiaries as men. The benefit aims to compensate for income lost when parents reduce work after a child’s birth.

Elterngeld Plus Surpasses Previous Records

Meanwhile, the adoption of Elterngeld Plus—a lower monthly, longer-term parental benefit—has hit a new high. Approximately 648,000 individuals received or plan to receive this support, accounting for 40.3% of all recipients. The program encourages shared childcare responsibilities, potentially reflecting more parents remaining in the workforce.

Experts Push for Stricter Alcohol Policies

Researchers specializing in addiction have urged tighter regulations and higher prices for alcoholic beverages in Germany. They argue current policies are too lenient, citing the country’s relatively lax alcohol framework and above-average consumption levels. A new report notes Germany’s average annual pure alcohol intake stands at about 11 liters per person, exceeding the European average. This is linked to up to 200 diseases and around 44,000 annual deaths attributed to alcohol use.

Lufthansa Strikes Disrupt Travel Plans

Pilots and cabin staff at Lufthansa have been on strike for four consecutive days, leading to widespread flight cancellations. Frankfurt Airport operator Fraport reported 656 disrupted flights out of 1,313 scheduled departures at the hub. The strike, driven by overlapping disputes, has overshadowed the airline’s 100th-anniversary celebrations. Mediation efforts between Lufthansa and the pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit failed a day prior, with both parties unable to reach an agreement. The walkouts will extend into Friday, affecting core operations like Lufthansa Cargo and CityLine, though Eurowings expects to maintain over 70% of its scheduled flights.

Bayern Munich Eyes Bundesliga Title After Champions League Triumph

Bayern Munich is preparing for the next phase of its season following a dramatic 4-3 victory over Real Madrid in the Champions League. Sports director Max Eberl stated that securing the Bundesliga title this weekend would be “a brilliant way to finish” the week after their 6-4 aggregate win. He praised the team’s resilience, noting their ability to recover from being three goals down. “That sums up the character of this team pretty well,” Eberl added. The club now aims to clinch its 35th league title on Sunday against VfB Stuttgart before advancing to the German Cup semi-finals at Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday.
