Woman arrested over death of girl found in pond
Woman Detained Following Death of Girl Discovered in Pond
A woman in her 30s has been detained on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter and child neglect after the tragic death of a seven-year-old girl found in a pond near Doncaster. Nyla May Bradshaw, from Skellow, was last seen at a park in the Owston district on 30 March before being reported missing shortly afterward. She was discovered motionless and positioned face-down in the grounds of Owston Hall Hotel, with her condition confirmed at Doncaster Royal Infirmary at 13:18 BST that day.
South Yorkshire Police stated that early investigations suggested no foul play, but additional evidence prompted the arrest. Det Ch Insp Gary Magnay emphasized the profound emotional toll of Nyla’s passing, expressing solidarity with her family during their grieving process. He also urged the public to refrain from making assumptions and to maintain discretion regarding the case.
“Nyla May’s family remains our priority as we continue to explore all aspects of this incident,” Magnay added. “We will ensure they receive unwavering support throughout this challenging period.”
During an inquest held at Doncaster Coroner’s Court, it was revealed that Nyla, who was non-verbal and autistic, had been under the care of a childminder when she exited through a gap in the fence and ventured into adjacent woodland. Emergency efforts to locate her involved aerial surveillance using drones and a police aircraft.
A close family friend, Charlotte Cooper, shared heartfelt memories of Nyla, describing her as “radiant and full of energy.” “She was the kindest girl I’ve ever known, and her brothers cherished their little sister deeply,” Cooper reflected. “Nyla brought joy to everyone she met, never showing a hint of sadness.”
Since the incident, a memorial fundraising campaign has raised over £20,000. The BBC continues to update the story with new developments, encouraging readers to revisit the page for additional information. Breaking news alerts can be accessed via the BBC News App or by following @BBCBreaking on X.
