Champion Zhao defeats Highfield after Virgo tributes

Zhao Xintong, China’s reigning world champion, edged out Liam Highfield of England in a gripping match at the Crucible, marking the tournament’s emotionally charged opening day. The 22-year-old secured a 10-7 win after holding a 5-4 lead following the first session. In the second session, he dominated with five of the next eight frames, showcasing his composure under pressure.

Emotional Tribute to John Virgo

Before the match commenced, a moment of silence was observed in honor of John Virgo, the late snooker player and commentator, who passed away in February at 79. The BBC team and other prominent figures in the sport paid tribute to him, highlighting his iconic status. “The cathedral was packed and we gave John a wonderful send-off as he was a very special man,” said Dennis Taylor, the 1985 world champion, reflecting on the memorial service held in Sheffield Cathedral, just a short walk from the Crucible.

“He was a great all-round entertainer,” Taylor added. “There’s a big gap here in the Crucible this year with John not being with us.”

Virgo, whose voice was synonymous with snooker, was described by BBC presenter Hazel Irvine as “universally loved by everyone in this sport and beyond.” His legacy remains vividly present at the venue, where players and fans alike recall his contributions.

Match Highlights and Player Perspectives

Zhao, who claimed the World Championship title last year, faces Ding Junhui or David Gilbert in the last 16. “It was very difficult for me and there’s a lot of pressure, but it’s good for me and this is a big moment in this season,” he shared, acknowledging the challenges. Meanwhile, Highfield, 35, returned to the World Snooker Tour after a wrist injury in 2023 and had to conquer four qualifiers to reach the Crucible. “You don’t play at the Crucible every day,” he noted. “I’ve only ever played four matches here in my life, and the pressure gets on you with a big crowd.”

“At times I thought he looked edgy and I got him on the ropes, but I let him off and he will punish you because he is that good,” Highfield remarked, highlighting Zhao’s resilience.

Zhao’s performance was bolstered by breaks of 123 and 112, while Highfield countered with a 86 and a 101 in frame 15. Despite a strong comeback attempt, Zhao’s final frame break sealed his victory, demonstrating his consistency.

Other Crucible Contenders

Meanwhile, Mark Allen of Northern Ireland trails Zhang Anda by two frames, with the second session set for Sunday. Allen, a former Crucible semi-finalist in 2009 and 2023, once achieved a 147 break during his last 16 exit. Zhang, ranked 22nd, aims to claim his first Crucible win after previous early exits. Three-time champion Mark Williams, on the other hand, built a 6-3 lead over Antoni Kowalski, a Polish debutant ranked 69th.

Zhao’s recent form, including four tournament victories and a World Championship win, has positioned him as a top contender. However, retaining his title requires overcoming the so-called “Crucible curse”—a challenge faced by all previous first-time winners who failed to repeat their success the following year. Zhao dismissed heightened pressure, focusing instead on his current performance.

As tradition dictates, the reigning world champion opened the tournament with a strong start, winning three of the first four frames. Highfield, however, capitalized on Zhao’s errors to clinch three consecutive frames, keeping the contest thrilling. The match ended with Zhao’s decisive 112 break, a testament to his skill and determination.
