Bodies of 50 babies, 6 adults found in Trinidad and Tobago
50 Infant and 6 Adult Bodies Uncovered in Trinidad Cemetery
Authorities in Trinidad and Tobago uncovered the remains of at least 50 infants and six adults at a cemetery in Cumuto on Saturday. The site, situated approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) east of Port of Spain, revealed a troubling scene where corpses appeared to have been left behind in an unmarked, haphazard manner.
Investigation into Unlawful Disposal
The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) described the discovery as potentially linked to “unlawful disposal of unclaimed corpses.” Among the adult remains, four were male and two female. Five of these adults bore toe tags typically used in morgues, while two—consisting of one male and one female—showed signs of having undergone autopsies. Officials have not yet confirmed if any of the remains were identified.
“Every cadaver must be handled with dignity and lawful care,” said Allister Guevarro. “Any individual or institution found to have violated that duty will be held fully accountable.” The officer emphasized the urgency with which police are addressing the case, highlighting their commitment to uncovering the truth.
Context of Violence
Trinidad and Tobago, a bilingual Caribbean nation consisting of two islands located roughly 10 km (6 miles) off Venezuela’s coast, has faced ongoing challenges with gang-related violence. Last month, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s government extended a state of emergency first enacted in December 2024. In 2024 alone, the country recorded 623 murders. According to the US State Department, it ranked sixth globally in terms of danger in 2023, with a murder rate of 37 per 100,000 people.
