Japan issues tsunami alert after strong earthquake
A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake near northern Iwate prefecture was felt in Tokyo, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning. Coastal communities in the north are being advised to evacuate as the event could trigger significant tidal waves.
Immediate evacuation orders issued
Monday’s seismic activity led to an official tsunami alert from Japan’s Meteorological Agency (JMA). The agency warned that waves reaching up to three meters (10 feet) might strike northern coasts within minutes. “Residents should quickly move to higher ground or designated safe zones,” JMA stated, emphasizing the need for prompt action.
“Evacuate immediately from coastal regions and riverside areas to a safer place such as high ground or an evacuation building,” the agency said, adding that property damage was expected.
Following the quake, a tsunami of 80 centimeters (32 inches) was recorded, confirming the initial warning. The disruption extended to transportation, with Shinkansen bullet train services between Tokyo and Aomori temporarily halted.
