Wembanyama wins NBA award with 100% of vote

Victor Wembanyama Secures Historic NBA Defensive Player of the Year Title

San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama has made history by winning the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award unanimously. At just 22 years old, he became the youngest recipient in the honor’s 43-year existence, joining David Robinson as the second player to achieve this feat within their first three seasons. Wembanyama, the 2023 No. 1 overall draft pick, not only led the league in blocks (3.1 per game) for the third consecutive year but also set career highs in scoring (25.0 points) and rebounds (11.5 per game), while averaging a steal per contest.

His defensive impact was underscored by the fact that he secured all 100 first-place votes in the league’s annual poll. “I’m super, super happy to win this award and actually super proud to be the first ever unanimous [winner],” Wembanyama shared with NBC. The award’s significance was further highlighted by Dirk Nowitzki of Germany, who remarked to AFP: “I’ve never seen anything like it. His defense is so good that he changes the game just by being on the court and taking away some of the lay-ups and twos that other teams would usually take.”

Playoff Openers Highlight Key Moments

In the opening round of the NBA playoffs, the Cleveland Cavaliers dominated the Toronto Raptors with a 115-105 home victory. Donovan Mitchell led the charge with 30 points, while James Harden added 28 to help the Cavs take a 2-0 series lead. Teammate Evan Mobley praised the duo, stating, “They’re one of the greatest (back-courts). It’s hard to stop them because of their offensive prowess. They can make any shot.” Toronto’s RJ Barrett echoed the challenge, calling the Cavaliers “a problem and we’ve got to figure out how to fix that.”

Meanwhile, the Minnesota Timberwolves staged a remarkable comeback against the Denver Nuggets, defeating them 119-114 to even their series at 1-1. Anthony Edwards tallied 30 points and 10 rebounds in the process. The Atlanta Hawks also secured a road win, defeating the New York Knicks 107-106 to tie the series. CJ McCollum’s 32-point performance stood out in that contest.

Wembanyama’s Dual Threat Status

As the Spurs posted the second-best regular-season record (62-20), Wembanyama’s defensive dominance complemented his offensive contributions, solidifying his position as a serious contender for the Most Valuable Player title. His ability to influence both ends of the floor has been a defining aspect of his career, showcasing a rare blend of physicality and skill.

The playoffs kicked off with the Los Angeles Lakers securing a strong start, as they defeated their first-round opponent in a thrilling opening game. This marked the beginning of a competitive postseason that promises high stakes and standout performances across the league.
