Morgan leads from front in emotional tribute to cousin
Morgan Steps Up as Leader in Emotional Tribute to Cousin
Jac Morgan, the Ospreys back row player, showcased his leadership during a pivotal United Rugby Championship (URC) match following the passing of his cousin and close friend Harri. The 26-year-old flanker was honored as man of the match for his standout display in the Ospreys’ 21-17 victory over Sharks at Brewery Field in Bridgend. Despite the emotional weight of Harri’s death, Morgan was determined to take the field, wearing a special jersey featuring a tribute to his late relative.
His performance on Saturday evening was a heartfelt tribute, as Morgan highlighted the deep bond he shared with Harri. The following day, he shared a poignant message on social media, reflecting on the loss: “This week I suddenly lost my cousin and best friend Harri. He meant the world to us as a family.” Morgan emphasized Harri’s passion for rugby, stating, “He loved so much about life, but his greatest joy was playing rugby for Brynamman.”
“He led from the front. He had a tough week and he led exceptionally well and the players got behind him as well,” remarked Ospreys head coach Mark Jones. “What a way to perform in such a big game as a captain. He was tremendous.”
Brynamman expressed their grief over Harri’s passing, calling him “a true warrior, immensely talented, and fiercely dedicated.” The club noted his unwavering commitment to the game, his teammates, and the team’s identity. Morgan’s actions on the field were seen as a tribute to Harri’s legacy, with the flanker scoring a try and contributing significantly in both attack and defense.
Family’s Geography and De Vera’s Wales Debut
The emotional backdrop of Harri’s death extended beyond Morgan’s performance, as the loss of their vice-captain left a lasting impact. The family’s connection to the sport was highlighted, with Morgan’s tribute underscoring the significance of Harri’s passion. Meanwhile, the upcoming season sees Morgan preparing to join Gloucester, with three matches remaining at Ospreys before his transfer. His next fixtures include a Welsh derby against Cardiff and a home game against Scarlets, followed by a trip to Leinster.
After recovering from a dislocated shoulder sustained during Wales’ autumn opener against Argentina, Morgan has swiftly regained his form. The injury initially prevented him from leading his country in the Six Nations, but his recent performances have reaffirmed his readiness. Coach Jones praised Morgan’s ability to embody the team’s spirit, stating, “A team replicates its captain. Look at the effort and care that the players show for each other from the physical aspect, Jac epitomises that.”
Jones also noted Morgan’s versatility, highlighting his strong ball-carrying and impact at the breakdown. “His performance against Sharks demonstrated his ability to gain metres through contact and disrupt the opposition,” he added. The coach drew a comparison to former Wales and Lions back row Justin Tipuric, who was known for his contributions in set-pieces, defense, and attack. “Jac is very similar,” Jones concluded.
