World’s Largest Condom Producer to Hike Prices Amid Iran Conflict

Karex, the leading global condom manufacturer, has announced it will increase prices by as much as 30% following disruptions caused by the ongoing Iran war. The firm’s CEO, Goh Miah Kiat, shared this update during recent interviews with Reuters and Bloomberg. Production costs have spiked significantly since the conflict began, according to Goh.

Supply Chain Disruptions

Global oil shipments have faced major delays since Iran escalated tensions by threatening to attack vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. This action has effectively shut down the critical waterway, disrupting worldwide logistics. Approximately one-fifth of the planet’s crude oil and liquified natural gas typically flows through the strait, making its closure a significant event.

Material Costs and Demand Trends

Karex depends on petroleum-based resources, such as ammonia for latex preservation and silicone lubricants. The CEO noted a 30% surge in condom demand this year, compounded by higher freight expenses and shipping delays. These factors have intensified shortages, he explained.

“During uncertain times, the demand for condoms rises because people worry about their future—whether they’ll keep their jobs or face financial strain,” Goh said to Bloomberg. “Having a child now means adding another person to support, which increases the urgency of using protection.”

The rising condom prices reflect broader economic pressures from the U.S.-Iran conflict, which has already shaken energy markets. As of Wednesday, peace discussions between the U.S. and Iran were unresolved, with President Donald Trump pledging to prolong the ceasefire until diplomatic talks advance.
