The Drama star Jordyn Curet says playing young Zendaya is ‘dream come true’
The Drama: A Young Star’s Reflection on Playing Zendaya’s Youthful Self
The Role and the Pressure
Securing a major role can be a tense experience for any performer, but for 17-year-old Jordyn Curet, the opportunity to portray a younger Zendaya was particularly significant. The A24 film *The Drama* centers on Emma and Charlie, a couple on the verge of marriage whose bond is challenged by a shocking revelation just days before their wedding. Curet recalls feeling “a lot of pressure” as she stepped into the shoes of a younger Emma, yet she expressed deep excitement and pride about joining the project.
The role came unexpectedly when Curet noticed an open casting call on her Instagram. After submitting an audition, she was contacted by Norwegian director Kristoffer Borgli via Zoom and later invited to Boston to meet the crew. It was there she learned she had landed the part. “It was a dream come true to work with Zendaya,” Curet said, noting her admiration for the actress. “But the pressure was real, trying to capture a younger version of her while staying true to the character.”
A Personal Connection to the Story
The film’s plot takes a dramatic turn when Emma confesses to planning a school shooting at 15, ultimately deciding against it. This revelation, shown through memory flashbacks, includes scenes of Curet’s character practicing shooting and creating a manifesto video on her webcam. While the twist has sparked debate, Curet emphasized that the story is more about the themes of redemption and forgiveness than the violence itself. “The film explores whether Emma and Charlie can find a second chance,” she explained. “I think humans are capable of change, and it’s easy to let one mistake define them.”
Gun violence is a common element in American culture, yet the film’s treatment of the topic has drawn mixed reactions. Some critics argue the subject is better suited for a serious drama, while others praise its bold approach. Curet, who was 15 during filming, felt the message was essential. “It’s definitely part of our country’s story,” she said. “I felt like the message needed to happen.” She also stressed the importance of handling the subject with care, acknowledging the responsibility that came with it.
Acting Experience and Preparation
With a career spanning over a decade, Curet has appeared in projects like *Marriage Story* and the sitcom *Home Economics*. However, she found the experience of playing young Emma uniquely challenging. “I leaned into my own teenage years,” she said, noting her familiarity with online culture and social media. “During the pandemic, I learned a lot about internet life and made online friends, which helped shape Emma’s personality.”
Curet also researched the emotional struggles of adolescence, particularly the feelings of awkwardness and loneliness depicted in the film. “Teenagers often feel isolated, especially during their formative years,” she added. “I think many can relate to that.” Her personal insights helped her bring authenticity to the role, blending her experiences with the character’s journey.
