Football Focus to end after 52 years
Football Focus to end after 52 years
Legacy of a landmark programme
BBC Sport has revealed that the Saturday lunchtime show will conclude its 52-year run. Since its debut as part of the Grandstand lineup in 1974, the programme became a staple for football enthusiasts, offering insights through interviews, expert analysis, and feature stories before key matches.
Shift to digital platforms
The decision follows evolving viewer preferences, with growing reliance on on-demand services and online content. Linear television viewership has steadily declined since 2018, prompting BBC Sport to rethink its approach. Football Focus will air until the end of the current season, marking the final chapter of its long history.
Transition and new initiatives
From next season, Kelly Somers’ The Football Interview will move to BBC One at 12:45 BST, while Final Score with Jason Mohammad will debut earlier at 15:45 BST. The BBC plans to amplify its digital offerings, including exclusive YouTube content, to provide more accessible and engaging coverage.
Iconic presenters and legacy
The programme began as a precursor called Football Preview, hosted by Sam Leitch. It later evolved into Football Focus, with Bob Wilson becoming a defining face. Over the decades, notable presenters such as Steve Rider, Gary Lineker, Ray Stubbs, Manish Bhasin, and Dan Walker contributed to its success. Alex Scott, who has led Football Focus for five years, will be its last host.
“Football Focus has been a cornerstone of BBC Sport’s history, delivering football narratives to generations of fans,” said Alex Kay-Jelski, director of BBC Sport. “This move reflects our adaptation to audience trends and ensures we meet fans where they are.”
“Alex Scott is a standout presenter, celebrated across both men’s and women’s football. She will continue to drive BBC’s sports coverage, including the Men’s World Cup and Women’s World Cup in 2027, and lead the Women’s Super League and BBC Sports Personality of the Year,” added Kay-Jelski. “We’re also developing a new project with her—details to follow soon.”
