Grime artist Skepta cleared of drug-driving charge
Grime artist Skepta acquitted on drug-related driving charges
British grime musician and producer Skepta, whose real name is Joseph Adenuga, was found not guilty of a drug-driving offense following a court decision. The ruling came after evidence failed to meet the required legal standards for prosecution. Officers had initially reported detecting the scent of cannabis in Adenuga’s vehicle and a positive roadside test for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a compound present in cannabis. However, the judge concluded that the expert testimony could not confirm the test result’s reliability.
Incident details and court proceedings
The charge, related to exceeding the permissible THC level while driving, arose from an encounter in High Wycombe on 14 May 2024. Police officer PC Talan O’Neill stopped Adenuga for speeding, noting he had overtaken another vehicle in the outside lane at a speed above the 30mph limit. The test was conducted at 10:54 GMT, and the sample showed THC positivity. Despite this, the judge terminated the case, stating that the evidence did not conclusively prove guilt.
“The expert could not be certain the reading was accurate,” said District Judge Arvind Sharma, who dismissed the charges. He emphasized that the THC concentration in the sample needed to satisfy the criminal threshold for prosecution.
Adenuga, who resides in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, was cooperative during the process. The court also heard that he faced additional accusations in November 2023, including speeding in a 30mph zone and not supplying information about the vehicle’s driver. These matters were also dropped after prosecutors indicated they would not present further evidence.

Skepta, recognized for tracks like “That’s Not Me,” has achieved notable success with two UK top 10 singles and three top 10 albums.
