Turkey to return to F1 calendar in 2027

Turkey to Rejoin Formula 1 Calendar in 2027

After a six-year absence, Turkey will host the Formula 1 Grand Prix once more in 2027. The race will take place at the Istanbul Park circuit for a minimum of six years, continuing through 2031.

In 2020, Lewis Hamilton won his record-breaking seventh world title on a wet Istanbul Park track, a moment that will be revisited in 2027 as the event returns. Turkey initially held the Grand Prix from 2005 to 2011, then briefly resumed for two seasons in 2020-21 to fill gaps during the pandemic.

Adding Turkey to the schedule does not mean the calendar will grow beyond its 24-race limit. The race will replace other events as their contracts end or shift to a rotational format. For example, the Belgian Grand Prix will host four races between 2026 and 2031 under a new agreement.

“Formula 1 ranks among the world’s foremost sporting events, distinguished by its spectacle, its young fan base, and its leadership in automotive technologies,” said Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. “Our country has a widespread following for the sport, particularly among the youth, with a passionate fanbase.”

“The races reach nearly 19 million people in our country, while around 7.5 million follow them closely on social media,” added Erdogan. “I regard Turkey’s return as a clear reflection of the strong confidence in our country’s organisational capabilities, modern sports and healthcare infrastructure, and the nation’s renowned hospitality.”

“We are delighted to be returning to the incredible and vibrant city of Istanbul from 2027 to thrill fans globally on one of the most exciting and challenging circuits in Formula 1,” noted F1 President Stefano Domenicali. “Istanbul serves as a cultural bridge between Europe and Asia, offering a unique fusion of history and tradition with a progressive approach to sport, business, and entertainment.”
